During the 2017-2018 school year, FIHRI provided financial support to the Ka'u Alternative Learning Center. The purpose of the support was to ensure the learners had access to appropriate learning materials and healthy snacks during the school day. The students were taught by Dr. Dufault who was serving as a long term substitute teacher.
The curriculum was created daily by Dr. D and based on current local and international news stories. Each topic studied by the students was of interest from a local cultural standpoint and related to the learning goals set forth in the Hawai'i Content and Performance Standards. Curriculum materials for a unit on honey bees is provided below as an example of Dr. D's teaching style.
